it’s good. just make sure you keep that gpa up cuz it’s really easy for it to slip in college. n you’re a freshman, so you’ve got it easy now

Hi! I originally wanted to go to medical school (I’m going to law school now), but there are many things you can do to make sure you get into a good medical school.

Working in a lab is a very good idea! Most medical colleges prefer that you have lab experience, and the fact that you are a freshman in a lab is very good, especially if you stay in the lab for longer. You should look into the possibility of doing an honors project your senior year. Most pre-med students do not do honors, so it would definitely make you stand out from the crowd.

It’s also important to keep your GPA up. A 3.5 is pretty good, but try to get it up higher. Medical schools will only be looking at your transcript through your junior year (or possibly the first semester of your senior year). Try to get your GPA to the top 5% of your class.

Also, try to get in some volunteer experience at a clinic or a hospital. Better experiences are ones where you would have direct interaction with a doctor or with patients. Bad experiences are ones where you do paperwork.

Finally, study hard for your MCAT! It is NEVER too early to begin. I started studying for LSAT a year before I took it, and the LSAT is not a test of knowledge like the MCAT is. The earlier you begin studying, the better you will retain all the knowledge you need to do well. You can buy study guides on ebay, which will make them cheaper.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

UMBC is one of my favorite schools (I lived in Baltimore for 15 years and worked at Hopkins). Any research done at UMBC will be acceptable and if you’re planning on going to Maryland’s medical school, a letter of recommendation from the lab director will carry a lot of weight (as most people will know him/her).
