I have 8 years experience as a certified Medical Assistant, I’m bilingual and I also have been trained to work in the front office, making appointments, scheduling surgeries and verifyng benefits with insurance companies. How much should I be earning?

Go to salary.com and type in your title and where you live. Where you live is the most important thing, because pay rates are so different in each area. When you put in the information, you will get a chart with the lowest, median and highest rates in your area. You will be able to put in your years of experience, as well. This is not foolproof, but it should at least give you an idea. You do not have to pay for it, you can get a free report right there. I use this when I have an interview and do not know what they are paying.

Good luck!

According to the US Dept of Labor, “ the median annual earnings of wage-and-salary medical assistants were $26,290 in May 2006… and the highest 10 percent earned more than $36,840.” Certainly it seems with your training and experience you have a lot to offer a medical practice and should be receiving compensation on the high side of the scale. Also, geographical location is important as a medical assistant in a large north east city will often earn more then one working in a more rural setting. However you should evaluate your financial worth to the practice and present your case to the owners, most will accommodate as it is expensive to hire a train a new medical assistant. If can be of additional help let me know! Dr. Anderson, St. Augustine School of Medical Assistants

It usually depends on where you live. Go the the website for the American Association of Medical Assistants, and they should be able to help you. At most of the offices in my area (Ohio) an MA with experience makes around $10-$12/hour. But, I know that is low compared to some states. Here is the website:
