Career Choice:Medical Assistant or EKG/Phlebotomy?
Alissa asked:
I want to make a choice but don’t know which training program to choose.
Phlebotomy is taking blood.Ekg is putting the elctrodes on people to check their heart.
Medical Assistant has that training too, but it’s not as deep. The Medical Assitant training is more office oriented.( and longer school).
The medical world will always need these professions, I am just having a hard time deciding.
Here in NJ, we have a combination program for both EKG technitians and Phlebotomists.
micha, you have to go 4 yrs in NJ to be an RN.
They have 1yr and 18 month programs for LPN. I do not want to be a nurse. I don’t think I am smart enough, I have looked at the materials.

EKG because it’s in higher demand.
I’d go to nursing school, we are in the middle of a nursing shortage, the pay is a lot better, better benefits, better retirement, less likely to be laid off. You can go to a JR college and get an RN degree in 2 years.
Of the choices that you listed, I’d pick the EKG tech.
They all are in high demand. It depends on where you live or where you might live later on.
Your best training would come from a Medical Assistant program, you learn to do Phlebotomy and EKG’s plus much more.
Are you wanting to work in a hospital and not a Doctors office?
There are lots of Med. Assist. who work in hospitals and clinics it is not just office oriented. Teaching hospitals hirer Medical Assistants for a number of different positions. Why not get the better education and not restrict yourself
