Can Medical Assistant assist Surgeons?

Would I have to work as an MA first and then acquire training and more education to be able to assist the surgeon?
I do know that some MA are able to assist some doctors with minor things.

No a MA may not assist in surgery if you would like to do this you should take OR Tech classes you can help with instruments and such this way. Only a licensed Physician can assist.
