can I apply for a medical assistant position with out obtaining a certificate or degree?

Yes you can if you can find a position willing to train; but the more training you go in with, the easier it will be to find a job as many practices do not have time to train someone from ground zero. You also may be more limited to doing more front office than back office and it may be harder to find another job after if you do not have a broad foundation (can only do those things you learned on one specific job). I would look around your area & talk with some office managers & try to get a sense of how things are going in your specific area.
But currently, there is no requirement than MAs must be certified or have a degree, as you work entirely under the MDs license & direction.
